The Lighthouse and the Tugboat

“Everyday that I am your lighthouse, your partner by the sea, is another day of memories no shoal or storm has the power to take from me. Are they all good memories? Perfect memories of bright sunny days? Of course not. If all days were like that what use would there be for either tugboats or lighthouses?”

In the first year of our relationship, when I was still negotiating its new language, I wrote you a short story called “The Lighthouse and the Tugboat.” It told of a short, stubby lighthouse that longed to be of use to someone and of a scrappy tugboat that feared the ocean’s great storms would one day swallow him up. In their partnership, however, they discovered how much more each of them could be together.

I invite you to visit Tilted Windmills to listen to my reading of the short story that inspired this painting.
